Early
morning sounds of life in the Carolina woods call lovers of nature to life. Dazzling colors broadcast the southeastern
sky like children playing with watercolors for the very first time. Birds make
their melodies like orchestras in the soundtracks of favorite old time
cartoons.
Rabbits and squirrels hunt for their breakfasts hopping
climbing. One likes plants. The other likes plants. The air of beautiful mornings
pours clean and feels like favorite beverages sliding down at first breaths.
Life is good in the mountain woods. Behind the fluttering coming of day, calm
reigns.
Today’s sunrise and early morning foraging for the fruits of
the forest is just like every day before it. Nothing is different, at least not
at first. Life always has her unique way
of throwing an outside curve that breaks back in over the plate when least
expected.
Two women living in an off the beaten
path cabin, Cathy and Sherry, walk in the woods to enjoy an early morning look
for mushrooms, roots, herbs, and berries growing wild. They enjoy their lives in this remnant of
Eden.
No men tell them what to do. No small children dominate
their attention. They are free to be and live as they choose. They enjoy their early morning walks as the
sun climbs the sky. The walk in the fresh air invigorates them for their day
ahead.
The morning has been successful. It is uneventful except for the things they found.
Wild strawberries and blackberries join sassafras and ginseng roots. Mushrooms crown the basket to running over. Happiness gives birth to smiles and the
journey back to the cabin begins.
Then what is least expected happened. Something sticks out
from under fallen limbs and leaves. It looks
like a hand.
